ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Electric vehicle drivers now have another high-speed fueling option in Rockford with a new Tesla Supercharger site at the 11th Street Plaza Shopping Center.

Tesla’s first 150 kWh Rockford Supercharger was installed at the CherryVale Mall, 7200 Harrison Avenue; the second, in the parking lot of Woodman’s Food Market, at 3155 McFarland Road, offered faster charging speeds at 250 kWh.

The new Supercharger, at 3124 11th Street, is located near the US 20 interchange and allows 12 vehicles to charge simultaneously at up to 250 kWh.

The station, which became operational shortly before Christmas Day, offers longer cables and a built-in “Magic Dock” adapter to fit non-Tesla EVs.

Tesla has currently partnered with Ford, Rivian, General Motors, Volvo, Polestar, and Nissan to allow their EVs to fuel on the global Supercharger network, but drivers are required to purchase an adapter to convert the Combined Charging System (CCS) plug to Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) format.

The new “Magic Dock” stations require no adapter since it is built into the hardware and attaches to the charging cable automatically.

The company is also set to open a Tesla showroom at 1998 McFarland Road, in front of Meijer, between Tropical Smoothie Cafe and Gloss Nailbar.

Unlike traditional car dealerships, Tesla functions similarly to an Apple store: a customer orders a car at the showroom for a flat, non-negotiable fee, and the car is delivered from the factory once it is built.

According to the hours posted on the door, the showroom will be open between 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed Sundays.
